About
Black-Owned Brunswick is a community-centered platform that uplifts and connects the Black-owned businesses that shape culture and life in the Golden Isles. We make it easier for people to discover and support Black-owned businesses, and showcase the ways Black entrepreneurship continues to build and sustain Brunswick.
We spotlight the visionaries behind the storefronts, the makers, service providers, artists, farmers, chefs, and culture bearers whose work keeps our region thriving. Through digital storytelling, marketing support, and intentional connection, we help ensure Black-owned businesses are seen, supported, and sustained, not by chance, but by design.
This is a living archive. A gathering place. A trusted resource that celebrates who we are today while preserving our stories for the future.
Courtney McGill, Founder
I’m Courtney McGill, founder of Black-Owned Brunswick. What started as a passion project, simply documenting my experiences visiting local Black-owned businesses and learning the stories of the visionaries behind them, has grown into a trusted, community-centered platform. I created this work because our entrepreneurs deserve to be seen consistently, celebrated publicly, and recognized as the cultural and economic heartbeat of Coastal Georgia.
Growing up in this region, especially within the Gullah Geechee community of Hog Hammock on Sapelo Island, I learned firsthand how much history, creativity, and resilience live inside the people who keep this area thriving. Black-Owned Brunswick is my way of honoring that legacy and expanding spaces where brilliance can shine.
Today, this platform blends storytelling, digital archiving, creative marketing support, and events that bring people together. Drawing on my background in sociology, anthropology, and African American Studies, I approach this work with care and intention, documenting who we are, preserving our stories, and strengthening the connections that sustain us. Black-Owned Brunswick exists to help people find each other, consumers, newcomers, longtime residents, and business owners alike, so that our entrepreneurs can grow with confidence and our community can see its own power reflected back.
